Stupid Voters, Getting in the Way of Voting Rights

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Mandi, you have to see this video.

This is beyond ridiculous.

To attack Holder for stopping Florida from removing people from the voting rolls - as a pro-voting rights argument?

And from Ken Blackwell, a dude who tried to suppress the vote in Ohio, while serving his "dual roles as Chief Elections Official of Ohio and honorary co-chair of the "Committee to re-elect George W. Bush" during the 2004 election"?

Wait, wait.  Let's hear some more from Blackwell, since everybody knows Mr. Cain.

And also, why the Black Panthers thing?

Btw, here's what Florida is doing:

P.S. Did Michael Steele say no, or did they not ask him?

  1. That video was tragically hilarious. It was definitely a "we must burn it down to the ground to save it" type logic happenening there.

A note about those Panthers- for some reason the so-called "New Black Panthers" have been striking fear into the right wing chattering set. That these "Panthers" have been disavowed by the real Black Panthers group, and mostly seem to consist of two or three clowns who stage media friendly events seems to not figure into things at all. I didn't know that the Black Panthers were the boogeyman of the far right, and its interesting to me to follow that thread of thought.

But to give more background, apparently two guys were standing in the vicinity a polling place near Philadelphia(?). One or both of them had billy clubs. They were both members of the New Black Panther party. No one was prevented from voting. No one even complained that they were intimidated from voting. Yet the far right considers it an outrage that the Justice Department did not bring them up on voter intimidation charges. I think it seems to be a dog whistle that Obama intends to favor blacks, and scare whites. So to offset the dog whistle, you have the two jokers in the above video, so they can try to evade charges that the voting purges are racist. See how neatly that works?

They might have Michael Steele, but it seems the video was probably too crazy even for him. Which is something, I guess, coming from the guy who made the puppy video.

  2. Right, so let's sum up the "logic": right-wingers who bring guns to Obama speeches/town halls = patriots. Armed vigilantes who "patrol" the border and have seriously injured/killed people = patriots. A couple of random dudes who call themselves Black Panthers who are near a polling place with billy clubs = anti-voting terrorists?

I think they asked Steele and he said no. I don't know why, but I think this was even below Steele's tolerance threshold for being used by the party.

Well they had *billy clubs*! And they were Black Panthers!!! I don't think anymore needs to be said. 1+1=3, as clear as day. Therefore we need to make sure that only people we like can vote!! (I imagine all these things said in a high-pitched, breathless tone, lol.)

Only white people with guns can be patriots. Black people with guns are 1) Scary 2) Thugs 3) Gang members/rappers. It is known.

  4. Pllllllllbbbbbbbbbt. That was me blowing raspberries. And as I was mentioning earlier to you, what about hispanics/latinos? Isn't a big part of the suppression of the vote in Florida about suppressing the hispanic/latino vote? So far it feels like the Rs are stuck in a black/white dynamic - why do we think that is? Why is this even an issue about black people - because Obama and Holder are black?

  5. And I should clarify: I know voter suppression is often about suppressing the black vote: I come from Baltimore. But in this instance, it feels a forced dynamic.
